Least common denominator - GmatPrep DS Question

Dear All,

Please help me answering this DS question from gmatprep. I did try to search for this question but couldn't find. Please direct me if this question is already in the forum.

In the fraction x/y, where x and y are +ve integers, what is the value if y?

1) The least common denominator of x/y and 1/3 is 6
2) x=1

In this question, i couldn't understand the 1st statement. Please help.

Hey monusangeeta,

The first statement says that x/y and 1/3 have a least common denominator of 6. That means that 3 and y have a least common multiple of 6. You need to find a value of y such that the lowest number that is a multiple of both 3 and y is 6.

There are two such values of y, namely 2 and 6. Because you cannot isolate one single value of y, the first statement is insufficient.
