advanced word problem Q

by san2009 » Sat Jul 31, 2010 1:30 am
Maybe the question is convoluted....but I interpreted the question to ask ...what was the value of the inventory at the end of the week? Was i correct?

At the beginning of a certain week, a certain gift store had 550 candles in stock, which the store had purchased for $0.25 each. If, during the week, the store made exactly one additional purchase of candles, how much did the store pay for the candles that it had in stock at the end of the week?

(1) During the week, the store's sales for candles totaled $120.
(2) During the week, the store purchased a box of 200 candles for a total of $40.00.

stmt 1
No information on additional purchase
INSUFF

stmt 2
each additional candles purchased was $.2
Initially, each candles purchased was $.25
But no information on sales for finding out the stock at the end of the week
INSUFF

Combined
no information on number of candles sold of type $.2 and of type $.25. Hence INSUFF

It would have been C if the question had said something like --- assume the store was operating not for profit or if it was selling at cost

Then I think Total Cost of 550 candles + Total Cost of 200 Candles minus Total of sales during the week would be equal to the cost of the remaining stock
