Hi,

You have a very good profile in terms of:

a.Work experience and
b. Academics

An MBA would definitely help you switch careers. A career in finance would be a good option. However you have to be clear in terms of different finance streams you are interested in. It could be Capital Markets (sales and trading, merchant banking, Equity research(Buy side/Sell side) and Equity sales etc), Corporate M&A, commercial banking, Private Equity funds, VC's etc.

Generally PhD's after MBA have a good chance in sales and trading roles and also domain specific M&A or Research roles. If you come with a good operational roles then you could target associate or senior associate positions in Private Equity funds or VC firms. Please feel free to post your Queries in the ASKgoISB thread or call one of the below numbers. Thanks!

Hi MainHoon,

With a PhD already in one field and 8 years of experience, business schools are going to look very hard at your reasons for switching. If you see the MBA as a way to enhance your career by building on your technical, educational and experiential background, you will need to be explicit about what the added business skills can do for you. On the other hand, if you are thinking of walking away from engineering and the oil & gas industry entirely you will need to be very persuasive. Schools are leery of people who come to the MBA without a clear idea of what it can do for them and why they want to spend two years and over $100,000 on the experience.

An experienced consultant can guide you toward telling your story in the strongest, clearest and most convincing way. Due to the sheer number of outstanding applicants, the competition is stiff, especially for South Asians with technical degrees. Kaplan offers outstanding admissions consulting services. You can see the profiles of our consultant on the website and choose one that fits your needs. You can request a specific consultant either through the link below or via 1-800-KAP-TEST.
