According to industry analysts, the recent growth in the number of hybrid motor vehicles in major metropolitan areas are likely to accelerate in the future.

A] the number of hybrid motor vehicles in major metropolitan areas are

B] the numbers of hybrid motor vehicles in major metropolitan areas are

C] the number of hybrid motor vehicles in major metropolitan areas is

D] the numbers of hybrid motor vehicles in major metropolitan areas is

E] hybrid motor vehicles' numbers in major metropolitan areas are

Solve on your own first.
OA is C:
Well I have the explanation for this sentence but just wanted to ask whether it is correct or no...

Option A: 'the number' is singular and so the plural verb 'are' is not correct.

Option B: Go back to the non-underlined part of the sentence, the subject 'the growth' is singular and so 'the numbers' a plural cannot be used and also 'are' cannot be used. The overall sentence should be in the singular as the subject is already mentioned in the non-underlined portion.

Option D: 'the numbers' is plural and the verb used 'is' is used. It is not correct.

Option E: Awkward construction and again a wrong usage of 'are' which is a plural...

So according to the options given, option C is the best answer choice...

Kindly say my explanation is correct or no... Thank You.

The Growth (subject)....IS (required); drop A/B

Normally possessive of inanimate objects is incorrect - drop E

The numbers is used when we are actually counting numbers - drop D

The original sentence supplies the incorrect plural verb "are" to refer to the singular subject "growth."

(A) This answer choice is incorrect as it repeats the original sentence.

(B) This answer choice uses the unidiomatic construction "numbers of vehicles" rather than the
appropriate idiom "the number of vehicles." Furthermore, the plural verb "are" does not agree with the
singular subject "growth."

(C) CORRECT. This answer choice supplies the correct singular verb "is" to refer to the singular
subject "growth." In addition, this choice uses the appropriate idiomatic construction "the number of
vehicles."

(D) This answer choice uses the unidiomatic construction "numbers of vehicles" rather than the
appropriate idiom "the number of vehicles."

(E) In this answer choice, the plural verb "are" does not agree with the singular subject "growth."
Furthermore, the possessive phrase "vehicles' numbers" is awkward and unidiomatic. The appropriate
idiom is "the number of vehicles."
