First piece forms a circle of circumference 2(pie)r. Rest of the wire (40-2(pie)r) forms the square with circumference 40-2(pie)r.

Total area = area of circle + area of square
= (pie)r^2 + ((40-2(pie)r)/4)^2

Simplifying the fraction will result in answer that matches E.
