School Selection

by npc811 » Thu Sep 06, 2012 5:50 pm
Hello,

I have begun to narrow my list of potential business schools I would like to apply to for Fall '13. The schools I am interested in are NYU (first choice), Columbia (second choice).

Now a little about me, I graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering with a 2.7 GPA. I know this GPA is low and I am severely disappointed in myself. I was hoping to use the Essay 4 on the NYU application to explain my situation from freshman/sophomore year when due to some personal reasons I was on academic probation but worked hard the remaining years to bring my GPA to where it is today. I graduated December 2011 and have been working full time as a design engineer, where I have the lead on projects from the concept stage through the prototype, testing and production. Although my GPA is low I think my Resume, work experience, recommendations and hopefully my GMAT score (which I take 10/27/12) should help my application.

A little about my resume, I am an eagle scout where throughout my boy scouting career I held multiple leadership positions. I have awards for my community service through my church and town. I have 3 intern experiences across different engineering fields, manufacturing engineering, quality engineering and design engineering where the final design engineering position was transitioned into full time employment upon my graduation. My strong work ethic and attention to detail will be discussed in my recommendations. I have worked through the majority of my undergraduate and would like to speak to that as well.

My question is, if I am capable of scoring in the 700+ for the GMAT do I have a chance to get into those schools?

Upon completing my MBA I would like to work in investment banking. I think with my engineering background I can use my data analyzing skills, which I have groomed over the course of my studies and work experiences, to make an impact in this field. I would like to pursue an MBA with a finance concentration.

I thank you for your time.

Honestly, everyone has a shot, but you are going to need to knock the GMAT out of the park. I'll say that I did not have the best GPA in school - got bored of learn and repeat and was able to get into a top 10 program. Your work experience might work against you as of now...

Can you explain why my work experience would work against me? Is it the fields in which I worked or the positions I held?

Thank you

They don't count internships, they look for full-time work experience. This translates to only about 8 months' worth of experience. Most schools want at least 2 and will only consider stellar candidates with fewer than 2 years. Other ways to compensate for a low GPA are to have lots of promotions after graduating and great recs from people who speak to your accomplishments in work.

I do see where you are coming from in terms of work experience. Maybe I can expand on mine a little further and see if that helps. So my situation is rather unique in that I work for a smaller research and development business inside a larger Fortune 500 company. In doing so, I have gained alot of internal exposure directly with corporate based on the projects I have been working on. I am far more advanced than my 8 months of work experience shows and that would be something my manager can speak to in his recommendation. Since day 1 of my full time position I have rapidly been increasing the amount of responsibility I hold throughout the company. While I too thought 8 months was shorter, I was hoping that the admissions would notice I wouldn't be starting until the Fall and see by then I would have 1.5 years under my belt. I was really looking forward to starting school next year rather than waiting until Fall 2014. I guess I ultimately have to do what is best to help me gain admission to a higher caliber school.

Thanks again for the responses!

Although you may have gained great experience in your time, you still don't have enough work experience to get into a very good program. Much better to keep on working and doing well (for one or two more years) and then apply. You'll see MUCH better results.

Jon,

Thank you for your input. So I have an update on my situation. In the past few days I have been nominated for additional leadership training in my company. Out of roughly 60,000 employees worldwide that nomination shows me my company is interested in seeing my leadership skills grow. That being said, I believe i have finally found my path I would like to take. In my initial post I mentioned about pursuing an MBA with a finance specialization, which I will still be doing. However, I failed to mention I had 2 career goals, 1 to go into investment banking, but the 2nd which was more practical of my skills is to continue in the manufacturing environment and work up the corporate ranks. I will most likely be pursuing a part time MBA while I continue working. Although this will take me a little longer, it allows me to continue working and grooming my skills.

Does anyone have any advice with regards to good MBA part-time programs in CT or relatively close by?

I appreciate all of your help and guidance.

Aha! Well that's good news! I guess they'll be springing for your MBA too! :)
The only high-ranked MBAs close to you really is NYUs (and maybe not thaaaat close, but close enough) and CMUs. Chicago is also a short flight away
