Left and Right

by GmatKiss » Mon Mar 05, 2012 7:35 pm
Left-handed persons suffer more frequently than do right-handed persons from certain immune disorders, such as allergies. Left-handers tend to have an advantage over the right-handed majority, however, on tasks controlled by the right hemisphere of the brain, and mathematical reasoning is strongly under the influence of the right hemisphere in most people.
If the information above is true, it best supports which of the following hypotheses?

(A) Most people who suffer from allergies or other such immune disorders are left-handed rather than right-handed.
(B) Most left-handed mathematicians suffer from some kind of allergy.
(C) There are proportionally more left-handers among people whose ability to reason mathematically is above average than there are among people with poor mathematical reasoning ability.
(D) If a left-handed person suffers from an allergy, that person will probably be good at mathematics.
(E) There are proportionally more people who suffer from immune disorders such as allergies than there are people who are left-handed or people whose mathematical reasoning ability is unusually good.

Between
A and B, OA : unknown
IMO A.

(A) Most people who suffer from allergies or other such immune disorders are left-handed rather than right-handed.
>>Ans. Lets say total people 100. 50 RH (1 have allergy) and 50 LH (2 have allergy). No. of LH people with allergy will be greater than No. of RH people with allergy, so LH people with allergy will be greater than RH people with allergy.

(B) Most left-handed mathematicians suffer from some kind of allergy.
>>No. Lets say total people 100. 50 RH (1 have allergy) and 50 LH (2 have allergy). 48 out of 50 LH people do not suffer from allergy.

(C) There are proportionally more left-handers among people whose ability to reason mathematically is above average than there are among people with poor mathematical reasoning ability.
>>No. Argument does not give any information about people's math ability above average.

(D) If a left-handed person suffers from an allergy, that person will probably be good at mathematics.
>>No. There is no relation between person's allergy and math's skill.

(E) There are proportionally more people who suffer from immune disorders such as allergies than there are people who are left-handed or people whose mathematical reasoning ability is unusually good.
>>No. Total: 100 People, LH 50, RH 50, Allergic & good at maths: 10 LH and 5 RH.

People with allergy: 15 and LH People: 50
15 is not more than 50.

For me the answer came down to the options C and E. I chose C. C looks like the appropriate answer...

Option E if reversed could be correct as in a proportion the numerator is lesser than the denominator.

Options A and B are extreme statements.

By the way could anybody please tell us the OA. I really do not want to wait for the OA...

I have very less say in the Verbal section of GMAT, but I can't ignore PM's...

The hypothesis is not about the weak immunity or allergies here; hence A & B don't attract me. However, the hypothesis is surely about ability to reason mathematically, that's why I'll choose
C
.

LHP - frequently suffer from allergies than RHP
LHP > RHP on tasks controlled by right hemisphere of the brain. Math reasonin is under the influence of right hemisphere

A. This options speaks about count of the people whereas in the argument it is clearly speaking about frequency of occurrence. Hence out. As per the argument there can be 5 LHP who are always with allergy and 50 RHP who suffer rarely and it cannot be said as in A.

B. The argument speaks about higher mathematical skills in LHP but there is no mention about mathematicians.

C. Something that fits within the scope of the argument. Very close to the restatement of the second premise in the argument.

D. Allergy and math skill are not related.

E. No such link can be established from the argument.

IMO C.

From the passage:
Mathematical reasoning is strongly under the influence of the right hemisphere in most people.
Left-handers tend to have an advantage...on tasks controlled by the right hemisphere of the brain.
In short, left-handers tend to be good at math.

These statements support answer choice C:

There are proportionally more left-handers among people whose ability to reason mathematically is above average -- in other words, among people who are good at math -- than there are among people with poor mathematical reasoning ability.

The correct answer is C.

Reasons to eliminate the remaining answers:

(A) Most people who suffer from allergies or other such immune disorders are left-handed rather than right-handed.
That left-handers suffer from allergies more frequently than right-handers does not imply that most allergy sufferers are left-handed. Since most people are right-handed, it is entirely possible that most allergy-suffers are right-handed. Eliminate A.

(B) Most left-handed mathematicians suffer from some kind of allergy.
The passage tells us nothing about mathematicians -- people for whom math is a profession. Eliminate B.

(D) If a left-handed person suffers from an allergy, that person will probably be good at mathematics.
The passage links left-handers to allergies and to mathematical ability. It does not link allergies to mathematical ability. Eliminate D.

(E) There are proportionally more people who suffer from immune disorders such as allergies than there are people who are left-handed or people whose mathematical reasoning ability is unusually good.
The passage does not tell us what fraction of the population suffers from allergies. Eliminate E.
