OG 12th Ed. SC - Q70

In this question I am confused why 'had existed' is incorrect. The question refers to 'great ice sheets had existed in now currently temperate areas'. Why is 'had existed' incorrect. Since the ice sheets existed before the area were temperate dont we have to use 'had existed' as opposed to 'existed'? Existed is the correct answer by the way.

In the sentence 'Great ice sheets had existed in now currently temperate areas' it is incorrect to use the past perfect tense because the areas are temperate NOW = CURRENTLY and the past perfect is used to indicate that an event occurred before another PAST event.
