Profile evaluation please

by bizgrl23 » Tue Jan 11, 2011 10:44 am
Hello,
First of all, thanks to the Beat the GMAT community for such an informative forum. I was a silent surfer here. I took the GMAT few days ago and scored 690. Some credit goes to the BTG community (specially those daily questions and the 60 day study guide).
I am not very familiar with the MBA admission process so need some help.
I guess I would fall under non-traditional candidate. I am a nursing graduate with a bachelors degree from a top (the university itself isn't a top university in ranking but the nursing school is ranked between top 3-5 Nursing schools in the country). I am non-US citizen (but will be US citizen by the time I apply), and also hold a bachelors degree from non-US school. My undergrad GPA is 3.8.
I have worked as a nurse for almost 8 years, including a 3.5 years of international work experience. But I had breaks in career - because of migration (was on dependent visa and could not work etc.) and childbirth (I am 30 years old and have a child- needless to say, I am a female). I have worked in different positions and specialties of nursing including a post of nursing director (though I worked at that job for only 5 months and had to leave because I moved out to a different town). I have co-founded a non profit organization that has several active projects (to promote health and education) in developing countries. I am one of the board of directors for that non-profit. I also have 5 professional/scholarly articles published in medical and nursing journals and 4-5 articles published in newspapers and online newsportals.
I decided to do MBA because I am planning to start an apparel business (hopefully I will be able to start it before I go to business school). I have two goals, - to make my apparel company a world leader in the industry, and to reach out to poor people in the world through the non-profit I have co-founded.
The only problem I have is recommenders. Since I have worked for 3 different employers in last 5 years ( I changed employers because I moved to different places for family reasons- husband got a better job somewhere else...). My previous managers know me well and can give me great LORs. But most schools ask for current supervisors. (at this point, I am not working because I moved to a new town and am working on establishing my own business)
Like everybody else in the forum, I am also looking at the top 10 schools. I am thinking about applying for the 2012 term.

Based on this information, where do I stand? How can I improve my chances to get into the top tier schools?

Thank you,
Tara

You should be a very strong candidate for the top schools, both because of your achievements and because of your unusual (non-traditional) profile. Your nursing background, non-profit activities, entrepreneurial efforts and publishing record all will be strong points in your favor. Your clear goal will also add to your appeal.

Most applications have an optional essay that you can use to explain your choice of recommenders. Since you are applying for admission in 2012, you may have time to build a relationships that would provide a more current assessment of your skills. Are you working with anyone to start your company? Are you doing significant volunteer work? Good recommenders are people who know and can evaluate your potential and your performance. They don't have to be formal supervisors.

Also, schools will want to see that you are using your time productively, whether paid or not. Your apparel company and any volunteer work you pursue will make that point while possibly generating a more recent recommender.

Because the top schools are so competitive, I always recommend a safety school to my clients. You should look at top entrepreneurial programs such as Babson or schools with strong associations with nursing and healthcare.

Good luck,
Tani Wolff
