Took gmat today - Should I retake?

by workonnet1 » Sat Dec 27, 2008 3:57 pm
Hi,
Just came back from taking GMAT, and got a 730 (96%) - Q(49, 88%), V(40, 89%).

This I understand is a good score, but in no way a distinguishing one. I was getting 760 with GMATPrep and really did not perform as I had expected - I guessed at random last 3 problems in Quant, and last 4 problems in Verbal in the last few remaining seconds.

The issue is that I aiming for the top schools (harvards, whartons). I have good work-ex of 5 yrs, undergrad from highly selective international school, and masters (average GPAs though).
Will 730 be fine, if I am really banking on GMAT to make my application distinguished for the likes of Harvard, or do I need to retake it?

Your comments will help me greatly..

IMO, NO.

There is very little to none difference between a good gmat score (like 730) and a distinguishing one (like 780 for instance). I am quite sure it won't help you further even if you get 780. On the contrary. Seeing you got 730 and then retook the GMAT is kind of weird (unless you mentioned in your essays for instance that you are always striving for perfection or some sh*t like that, which kind of explains why you might do this but anyway it's not worth it) for your application and this might hurt you.

You should only retake if higher gmat score complements some other part of your application VERY WELL. Even with average GPA your 730 covers your academic ability pretty well. Actually I can't even think of a situation where you might benefit from a retake with that score, unless you get 800, although it's still not clear if 800 will help further :)
