Profile Evaluation - Canadian Schools

by cobam » Sun Aug 05, 2012 8:59 am
Hello,

I am interested in making a career switch into business based. As a non-traditional business school candidate, I would really appreciate any input you could give me about my chances. Thanks in advance!

My target schools are Canadian, specifically Schulich, Rotmans, Desautels and Sauder

Personal Info:
Age: 26
Nationality: Canadian
Ethnicity: Pakistani
Gender: Male

Education
BSc at the University of Toronto (2006-2009), I completed one year at The University of Western Ontario before I transferred to U of T.
GPA: 2.94 (I understand that some Canadian schools only look at the final two years of the program, in that case my GPA becomes 3.4 as I was able to average 3.7 in my final year and a half)
GMAT: Goal is to get 700

Work
Currently I am a science teacher at an international school in Sweden. The company I work for has a series of schools across Sweden educating over 11000 students and has been building new schools every year. I have had the opportunity to act as a department head for two years as the school I was employed at was just opening for its first year. I managed to establish our school's science curriculum, develop our lab facilities and provide support and resources for the members of my department. I have been working as a teacher at this school since August 2010 and my current contract runs until June 2013 with the option to renew.

During school I worked as a tutor for Math and English from 2008-2009

Extras
Most every summer since 2007 I have been working with recently migrated Afghan students tutoring in Math, Science and English.

During 2008-2009 I volunteered at a local cancer hospice that I was able to turn into a summer job in 2009.

My native language is English, however I can speak, read and write Swedish and I can speak Urdu.

I should also explain my low GPA. I was very unmotivated as I had felt that I had chosen the wrong major, even after transferring from my first school. I became more focused as I expanded my responsibilities by volunteering and getting a part time job. Since then I managed to vastly improve my grades, go to teachers college and find work.

I have only recently considered an MBA as a possible option and as you can probably see, I was quite reluctant to consider it due to my GPA. If you can provide me with any insight into programs that I could realistically be accepted into, I would seriously appreciate it.

I actually think that you have a better profile than you think you might. Actually, you may be surprised to learn that not having a business background is not really a disadvantage. And you DO have a very interesting background. What I like especially is you being department head, and setting up this department from the beginning. I think you can pull a lot of leadership and management out of such a story that would make you stronger than you think.

There are two caveats:
1. Very good GMAT - This is more important for you than others because firstly, you don't come from a business background, and secondly, you come from a pool which tests rather high.
2. That your goals make sense - If you tell me you want to be a Venture Capital dude, you won't be likely to get accepted. On the other hand a goal in "Education Management" or "Education Consulting" can be right up your line.

Soooo, I think that if you can hit that GMAT score you are aiming, your school choices should be fine.

Good luck on your test (and remember, when you get stuck, the answer is C! :) ), and let us know how you do!
