Profile Evaluation

by ca.nikhiljain » Mon Aug 27, 2012 8:44 pm
Dear Sameer,

Greetings,

Can you please evaluate my profile:

Academics:
i. Presently a CFA Level III Candidate. (Cleared L1 in December 2011 and L2 in June 2012)
ii. Chartered Accountant (CA) of May 2011 batch
iii. Graduated from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata in June 2010 (68% in aggregate)
iv. Passed Final Level of Company Secretary exams in December 2009 (before completing graduation)

I haven't yet appeared for GMAT. However, I am planning to give it in September.

Presently I am also pursuing a Diploma Course in Information Systems Audit from ICAI.

Co-Curricular Activtes:
Not much to speak about.
i. Was a Managing Committee member of CA Students Association wherein I have experience of organising National Convention and Seminars.
ii. Have contributed articles to College journal.

Workex:
i. 3.5 years of internship with a CA firm (basically my family profession as my dad is the Senior Partner of the firm) as a part of CA Curriculum which ended in March 2010
ii. Post internship I am working in the same CA firm. Have post internship workex of 1.5 years till date.

Major responsiblities included conducting audits and preparing audt reports and managing day to day activities of the firm.

I want to do an MBA from an elite BSchool. Post MBA I want to work in investment banking for some time and thereafter return to my CA firm to expand the same. I have shortlisted MIT Sloan, Tuck, Columbia, Booth, Michigan Ross, Stanford and Stern and ISB.

My queries is:

I feel I am lagging behind most MBA Students (and also most people who have posted their profiles on this forum) in the years of workex. I personally feel that its the right time to do an MBA though though. Moreover, the above B schools generally have 2 years as the lower range of workex (some even have nil work ex requirements).
Should apply for these programs now or should I work for few more years?

Alright dude,
Well you are on the dot when you ask whether you should wait a bit more. You seem to be at the beginning of your launch, but with 1.5 years (and 2.5 by matriculation) you are a bit on the low side. So if you wait one year or even two, you will likely be better off, with a better position and stronger stories. Plus, since you haven't yet taken your GMAT, you have plenty of time to get it right and hit that score! :)

But that is only the BEGINNING!

To hit really Top programs like you have listed, you need to STAND OUT. We need to hear more about all those other things about you that makes you who you are - from community service to extra-curcciulars, to entrepreneurship or whatever else. If you are weak in these areas, then this is your opportunity to CHANGE that. To join clubs, or do volunteer work, or anything else you set your mind to! And it WILL pay off when you apply.

Hope this helps you out, dude...

Thanks Jon for your reply.

However on the personal front, I feel its the most appropriate time for me to do an MBA. I mean one or two years down the line doing an MBA would not be on my priorities.

So considering my profile, can you help me with B Schools I can apply to right now?

Thanks

Nikhil

Hi Nikhil,

Most B schools dont take the 3.5 yr articleship as post graduation full time work experience and hence your 1.5 yrs will make the case very weak.

Your finance related certifications and diplomas will make the candidature strong.

We understand that you are very keen to get into a B schools next year and you will barely fulfill the minimum work experience requirement. So, GMAT score becomes really important for you.

From the list you have mentioned only Ross and ISB look somewhat achievable assuming you get a 730+ and have really strong essays. Below that, we would not recommend applying to Ross atleast.

You should look at Cornell, Kenan Flagler kind of schools if you get a 710+ or so.

If you feel that these schools are not good enough for you then the only option is to wait for one more year and getting a crack GMAT score.
