My bet is on 2 - to help him improve.

1) to help the latter improve - verbose, we don't need latter
2) fits
3) so that means in order to ( when they sit together), so 3 gets knocked.

Suggestions welcome.....

choice 1

1) to help the latter improve - correct
2) to help him improve - him can refer to richard or henry
3) so that he may improve - he can refer to richard or henry

I think 2nd one his correct, 'him' correctly refers to Henry and not Richard. The pronoun which can reflect Richard here is himself, as Richard is the subject of the sentence
as in..Richard studied regularly with Henry to help improve himself

I would go for 1

As said by Chaitanya, 'him' in 2 and 'he' in 3 are ambiguous.
