By applying the rules (I am assuming that the underlined portion is the only one that I can change)
Sentence 17 - The network security team is responsible for
1: detection of new viruses = Complex Gerund
2: creation of software patches to block those viruses = Action Noun
By not applying the rules
Sentence 17 - The network security team is responsible for
1: detecting new viruses = Simple Gerund
2: creation of software patches to block those viruses = Action Noun
The above is in line with the list in OG#64
eating rich foods
alcohol consumption (or consumption of alcohol)
Ideally I will like the following:
Sentence 17 - The network security team is responsible for
1: detecting new viruses = Simple Gerund
2: creating software patches to block those viruses = Simple Gerund
By applying the rules (I am assuming that the underlined portion is the only one that I can change)
Sentence 18 - He received a medal for
1: the sinking of an enemy ship = Complex Gerund
2: the capture of its crew = Action Noun
By not applying the rules
Sentence 18 - He received a medal for
1: sinking an enemy ship = Simple Gerund
2: the capture of its crew = Action Noun
Ideally I would make it parallel as follows:
Sentence 18 - He received a medal for
1: sinking an enemy ship = Simple Gerund
2: capturing its crew = Simple Gerund (convert action noun into gerund form)
My head is now spinning with this discussion. Somehow I feel that I should not worry about these rules and just follow logic and consistency.

i think the best way to resolve this discrepancy is to note that "eating" and "smoking" may also be regarded as action nouns -- because there are no dedicated noun forms for these actions.deep.amangmat wrote:If my understanding is correct, then why is this list in OG12#64 correct? All are nouns, but the forms are different and simple gerund is made parallel to action noun
i.e., *IF* there were actual action nouns for these words -- such as "eatage" or "smokation" -- then this construction would be unacceptable. however, because there are no such words, "eating" and "smoking" may be regarded as either gerunds or "action nouns".

on the other hand, the statement that "the verbING" should basically never be parallel to just "verbING" seems pretty solid to me.

1: detection of new viruses = Complex Gerund
2: creation of software patches to block those viruses = Action Noun
1st one is incorrect , it is not complex gerund but action noun as you have written for second one. I hope youhave got the answer to your question and have better understanding of how this works.
