The recent global boom in the market price for scrap steel and aluminium leads to a sudden rise in the theft of everyday metal objects like manhole covers, guard rails, and empty beer kegs.

A. leads to a sudden rise in the theft of everyday metal objects like manhole covers, guard rails, and empty beer kegs

B have led to a sudden rise in the theft of everyday objects such as manhole covers, guard rails, and empty beer kegs

C. has led to a sudden increase in the number of thieves for everyday metal objects like manhole covers, guard rails, and empty beer kegs

D. has led to a sudden rise in the theft of everyday metal objects such as manhole covers, guard rails, and empty beer kegs

E. is leading the suddenly rising theft of everyday metal objects: manhole covers, guard rails, and empty beer kegs

OA - D

Are we tested on "such as" versus "like" usage?

Since examples are discussed "such as" is correct and "boom" is a singular subject so "has led".
Also has is the present participle used to denote an action which has happened in the past and still continuing so has is prefect!!!
If you cant explain it simply you dont understand it well enough!!!

I read in Manhattan SC that such as and like are same thing. :/

Like you said, it has be "has led"...

We have two options left.

C changes the meaning of the original sentence.

increase in the number of thieves vs rise in the theft

Orginial sentence has rise in the theft
