Automation has undermined the traditional position of labor as much by robbing workers of the special Skills that were once their most important strength than by the elimination of jobs.

(A) than by the elimination of jobs
(B) rather than by the elimination of a job
(C) than by eliminating jobs
(D) as by the elimination of a job
(E) as by eliminating jobs

Answers A,B and C can be eliminated because the phrase we need to use in this sentence is AS...AS. Therefore, only answers D and E remain for further analysis.
D - incorrect, wrong use of singular "job" changes the meaning
E - correct

She mentioned why THAN is incorrect and cannot be used here.

Because the correct idiomatic form is AS MUCH AS.
AS MUCH THEN is a severely unidiomatic expression and cannot be used in the GMAT!

With choice E, the sentence will read like this:

Automation has undermined the traditional position of labor as much by robbing workers of the special Skills that were once their most important strength as by eliminating jobs.
