In 1791 Robert Carter III, one of the wealthiest plantation owners in Virginia, stunned his family, friends, and neighbors by filing a deed of emancipation, setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered his property.

A. setting free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered

B. setting free more than the 500 slaves legallyconsidered as

C. and set free more than 500 slaves, who werelegally considered as

D. and set free more than the 500 slaves who werelegally considered

E. and he set free the more than 500 slaves who were legally considered as

Can someone please explain why B is not the answer?

There are two reasons for which (B) is wrong over here.

1. "Consider As" is incorrect idiom.
2. Placement of word THE. Sentence (B) tries to state that he had only 500 salves but he freed more than that, which is logically impossible.

Whereas sentence (A) states that he freed more than 500 salves who (all) were his salves.

Hope this clears your doubt.

"The" refers to the 500+ slaves. it is used to give an estimate of the number of slaves, all of them were set free

A says- setting free the entire group of salves (the more than 500 slaves)
B says- setting free more than 500 salves, saying simply that the number of slaves who were set free was more than 500. There is an ambiguity- how many salves were considered his property- 500 or 500+ that he set free. It does not say that he set all the slaves free who were considered his property, whereas A says that there were more than 500 slaves who were considered his property and he set all the more than 500 slaves free.
Hope this explains
