Question from GMAT Prep

by akshatgupta87 » Mon Jul 11, 2011 10:47 am
I'm not posting any question, but had a doubt while tackling a particular question.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

While they remove carbon dioxide from the air, conserve soil and water, and house thousands of species, forests also supply potentially valuable pharmaceuticals, and, as sources of building material and firewood, that provide employment for millions worldwide.
a)pharmaceuticals, and, as sources of building material and firewood, that provide
b)pharmaceuticals and, as sources of building material and firewood, provide

I had a doubt regarding the use of and in the above 2 sentences. Can anyone explain.
As far as my understanding goes, the option b) uses and to create parallelism.
what is the role of and in b?
really confused with comma , and, comma ?

Thanks,
~Akshat

the comma before the and is actually a highly debated topic in grammar circles and the official rule books say that it is not necessary. In the difference between a and b I would focus on the existence of "that" at the end of the sentence. If you look at the essential part of the sentence it is saying that forests supply pharmaceuticals and provide employment, you do not need the extra that in a. So b would be a better choice. remember on the GMAT, especially in grammar, you are picking the best choice - not the perfect choice.

that in relative clause will refer to immediate noun.Hence A is not correct.

comma and comma is normally used in a list. Here it is not the case hence can be safely disregarded as being done in B.
