Editorial:The measures taken by our government to force Corollia to prevent Corollian criminal rings from illegally copying computer software developed in this country have failed. If they had succeeded, there would not have been a steep drop over the past year in the prices that our nation's computer companies can command in Corollia for legally imported copies of their software.

The argument above depends on which of the following assumptions?

1.Over the past year, computer companies in the editorial writer's country shipped considerably fewer copies of software to Corollia than they had shipped in recent years.

2 .The price of computer software legally produced in Corollia did not experience a drop over the past year.

3. The sales of computer software legally produced in Corollia rose over the past year.

4 A decline in demand for computer software throughout Corollia during the previous year was not the only reason for the decline in the prices of computer software in that country.

5. There is no market for the computer software illegally copied by Corollian criminal rings outside Corollia itself.

Government of country X has failed to prevent illegal copying of original software in country Corolia. This is the reason that prices of original software imported from country X to Corolia have experienced a steep fall.

We have to find another factor which could have affected the price of the software, but which has not been considered by the editorial, rather it has been assumed.

A. Shipping fewer copies need not have an impact on the price. Thus is incorrect.
B. the argument is not about legally produced software in Corolia.
C. This again does nothing to show why prices have fallen and cannot be an assumption.
D. This factor, the declining demand for the software, can also lead to a fall in prices and for the argument to be true, this assumption needs to be made. Hence, correct.
E. out of context.

Hence, D.

For discussion sake, we should provide the OA after some posts.
