Need a piece of advice

by NikolayZ » Sun Oct 25, 2009 11:30 am
Hello everybody!

So, here is the part of my gmat-preparing story ;)

In early September i decided to take 2 months off work to prepare for GMAT (I'm 22, graduated from University this year). So i divided my preparing time into 2 periods: 1)middle of September - 5th of October. Actual test. If result would not satisfy me i decided to prepare for a 2)rest of October and through 6th of November (Then actual test #2)

First time, i scheduled GMAT appointment on 5th of October. I had about 2.5 weeks to that appointment.
I have a friend who passed a GMAT last year, so i had no difficulties to decide how i should prepare for an exam. Surfed through MGMAT books 2007 - 3rd edition.
Also took 3 MGMAT Cats and 1 Gmatprep, results were quite different.
Mgmat Cats' scores varied from 640 to 680. Gmatprep was a disaster - 590...
So i took an actual test and got 680.
My goal is to break through a 700 benchmark. Of coarse i decided to retake an exam.

During the first 2 weeks after the test i carefully read MGMAT 4th edition books and did all OG12's test problems.
This week i have done 2 Mgmat tests and 1 GMatprep. Results terrified me.
Mgmat # 4 - 760 (49Q, 45V)
Mgmat # 5 - 780 (51Q, 45V)
Gmatprep #2 - 590 !!!!! (51Q, 22V)

My exam is on the 6th of November. And i can't decide whether i should reschedule it in order to improve my verbal skills. I really have no problems dealing with SCs and most of CRs, sometimes it is difficult for me to "solve" RCs.
So, here is my main question. Should i be anxious about such bad Gmatprep results and reschedule an appointment? Should i trust Mgmatpreps more than Gmatpreps ?
I am really nervous about the future appointment, because i will not have 12 hours a day to prepare for GMAT after the 6th of November.

Thank you!
Nick.

In your case, it seems that MGMAT scores were more accurate predictors of your performance. Ask yourself this:
- did you take all the tests in the same conditions (noise, distractions)?
- did you do all the sections or skip the AWA?
- were you tired when you took GMAT prep?

In case you had the same conditions for all three tests, then you might want to focus on practicing official questions before your test date. I'm confident that you can do even better on your next try, but only if you get in the GMAT mindset. Remember: test prep companies have a history of creating not quite GMAT-style questions, so you might be correctly answering MGMAT-style questions but running into trouble when faced with the real thing.

DanaJ, thanks for the post!
Actually, i was not tired, i had been just woken up, it was the problem i guess.
I need some time to allow my brain to fit into the rhythm of work in order to perform better. All mgmat tests were taken after some practice.

So, it is only 3 days to go. I've spent 8 hours at least, per day, last 2 months. I feel confident about all types of quant problems. And only RC makes me feel little annoyed.

So, i have found it quite productive to review few difficult problems at work, and to surf trough all flash-cards made by BTG forum community (THANKS A LOT)

Also, i consider efficient every attempt (good or bad) to explain different problems on the forum. It makes you know things a lot better! I hope problems i tried to explain do not remain obscure.

Whatever will be the outcome, i am very proud that our world has such an intelligent and smart community such as BTG!
p.s. hope to write a post, named "I DID beat the GMAT"
