striking differences

by ansumania » Sun May 02, 2010 7:40 pm
The striking differences between the semantic organization of native American languages and that of european languages, in both grammar and vocabulary, have led scholars to think about the degree to which differences in language may be correlated with nonlinguistic differences.

A-that of european languages, in both grammar and vocabulary, have

B-that of european languages, including grammar and vocabulary, has

C-those of European languages ,which include grammar and vocabulary, have

D-those of European languages , in grammar as well as vocabulary, has

E-those of European languages ,both in grammar and vocabulary, has

OA A

pl. explain .....

To agree with the plural subject "differences," you need the plural verb "have," which allows you to narrow the options down to A and C. "Semantic organization" is singular, so the correct pronoun for parallelism is the singular "that." Therefore, A is the correct answer. In addition, the modifying phrase that begins with "which" in C seems to be referring to "european languages," which is incorrect.

thanks for answer ...is really informative
but i am confused in 2 things
1)"have" should be there(follow) because of "lanaguges" or because of "differences"?
languages have....... or differenes have?

what if it was "difference" only instead of differences

2)could you please ellaborate bit on why that of european languages BUT NOT those of european lanuageS

once again thanks

Hi frank

have is there because of differences

those is used for plural subjects and that for singular....here we should refer to semantic organization, hence that is to be used..

i was concerned about meaning
ya about 'have' i think i missed it
ya it is differences....that ....have made scholars...

but i think in 2nd case, that doesnot reference to semantic organization ,it infact seems to refer to languages....may be as said to make it paraller ..'that' has been preferred....

between X and that of Y...construction

any way thanks

Frank1,
As others explained "that" refers to the organization of the languages.

That is, we are comparing the structure of native American languages with the structure of European languages, so that we can see what makes them differ from one another.
Though there are many languages, each language can have only one semantic organization.

If the original sentence were, "organizations of languages" (which doesn't make sense but for example) then we might have it as "those" because it is plural.

HTH. Thanks
