IMO: A because in this the would have clause is going parallel with the rest of the sentence which is in the have tone..isn't it or am i getting something wrong here..pls explain

See MGMAT SC Verb tense mood chapter case 5 of if ... then construction

Case that never happened in the past

If past perfect, then conditional perfect

A/C/E - no past perfect - eliminate
B - anyone is singular but we use 'they' - wrong

Only D fits perfectly.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

In a If ... Then ... construction, Isn't "then" compulsory ?
Just confused my way about the answer.

I understand the use of the third conditional here (If...then), but I have a question with the use of "any people" in option D. Why do we use any people and not anyone? Also, what is wrong with B? B was my first choice.
