Admission Query

by kbharadwaj.1987 » Thu Aug 27, 2009 6:56 pm
Sir, I gave my GMAT last month. I got a 720(q-49,v-38) I am a fresh graduate. I completed my Engineering this July 2009 with a 2.7 GPA. Is it likely that I would get admitted into below mentioned schools? Now this is something about my profile: I took part in various extra curricular activities such as on campus entrepreneurial activities, and also I assisted my college placement manager in fetching companies to the college in my fourth year. I'm an amateur DJ, vocalist. I was employed while in Undergrad, I was working as a teacher, and also I had contributed to the society by helping the orphanage kids. I have also done two six-month internships at Voltas Limited and Accenture India Limited.

The schools I'm interested in applying to are:

University of California at Irvine: Merage
Fox School of Business: Temple University
Thunderbird School of Management
Pittsburg University
Ohio State University

Hello,

With your young age and extremely short post-college experience, low GPA, solid GMAT, and strong extracurriculars, you present quite a varied and unconventional picture with "extremes" at both ends. I couldn't say it's impossible to get admitted to the programs you mention, because of your clear strong points (and some mitigating situation vis-à-vis the GPA). On the other hand you will need a very strong and well-developed application that pulls it all together into a coherent whole to have a reasonable chance. The one missing ingredient in your information is your goals, and they will need to be a key factor in how you shape your application strategy.

Best regards,

Thanks for the reply cindy. I would also like to mention that I would be having one year of work-ex by the time I join the program, i.e; August-2010. Could that add a bit to my profile? And also I'm planning to take up a Calculus course at a local school so that I would be having an additional transcript. But then, I could only just mention it in the essays as I wouldn't be completing it by the time I apply. Will this initiation help too?
And also how's the Finance program at Temple University, Fox School of Business and at Suny Buffalo Graduate school of business!

Hello,

Both things definitely will help.

Regarding the transcript, although it won't be available yet, you can state in an optional essay that you will keep them apprised and send it as soon as it's available, and also you can mention how you're doing so far if you've received grades on quizzes, exams, etc.

I believe the finance program at Temple is solid; I don't know about SUNY Buffalo. Best ways to check are: finance curriculum, finance companies recruiting there (check with career services on web site or even call/email and ask them), and students - you can probably find a way to contact or be put in touch with current students.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot Cindy. I hope I do get into one of the schools in my short-list. Again, thanks a lot for your guidance.
