Dear Stacy,

I have nearly 9 years of work experience in Engineering (IT industry). I have already completed a MBA through distance learning. But now I want to pursue another full-time MBA through one of the top schools in USA as I am not satisfied with my learning experience through distance learning. How will business schools view this case? Some people advised me not to mention about the previous MBA as that may affect selection process. is it true? Please advise.

Thanks
Viswanathan

I would need to know more about the program but I believe the way I would position it that you have taken business classes, and this sparked your interest in going to a full time MBA program. The classes show taht you are interested in learning, that you are engaged, that you can multi-tasl (balance work and classes). This is all good and will help your application. However, if you position it as having pursued a full MBA program, it may look like you are collecting degrees and are not as focused.

Dear Stacy,

Thanks for providing your opinion.

I joined my distance learning-MBA, only to learn Finance in-depth. I was so much impressed with some of the events happening in my country (One example is, real estate and stock market shaked when the reserve bank announced a 0.5% increase Cash-Reserve-Ratio). I started my MBA with only learning as an objective, with no career goal.

But during its course, I realized what MBAs can do in corporate world- how the future of the company can be affected by each decision taken by a top-level manager. It sparked my interest pursue a MBA with career switch as an objective. Clearly, my distance learning MBA can no where stand closer to a full-time MBA in terms of practical knowledge gained; Also, it can not fetch me the career switch (At least not easily).

I took my GMAT yesterday, and got a score of 650 (Q47 V33), and disapponited with it. Do i have a chance to aim for a seat in a top-10 school? In addition to my career in engineering (9 years Exp), I have few other things to highlight (National Merit Scholarship holder, Columnist in a National Daily, First/or second prizes in quiz/essay competions upto district level, and passed my Bachelors in Engineering with a University distinction)

Thanks,
Viswanathan

A 650 is a bit below average, as you know, but it absolutely will not keep you out of a top 10 school. I have seen almost every top school admit applicants with a 650.
