Completely new to GMAT! where do I begin?

by mrxalex319 » Thu Jul 08, 2010 10:28 pm
Hello everyone!

I didnt even know this site existed until I did some searching on google.com.

First of all, Let me tell you a little bit about myself.

Age: 24-27
Work exp: 3 Years
B.A in business management Econ
Target for taking the test: September/October 2010
Target School: Santa Clara University

Now, I never did very well in the SAT's in High school so I know the GMAT will be a problem with me. Except unlike the SAT, I plan on studying for them.

So far I have the
OG 11th and MGMAT SC 2007 edition.

What are some of the books that I should get? Should I get an updated version of the SC?

Also I read here that some of you are taking practice exams online called CAT? what is CAT and how do I get in on that?

Thank you so much for your help!

Hello!
First of all, I think you should get the new SC. I've only briefly looked through the 2007, but the new edition has more 300 pages and the 2007 has a bit over 100 so I figure the new one has a fair amount of extra info.

If you get the new Manhattan SC 4th edition you'll get access to 6 online computer adaptive tests (CATs)

As for how to proceed with a study plan you should look under the resources tab- the 60 day study plan might be useful for you

Cheers!

I recommend that the first thing you do is familiarize yourself with the test by taking a free online practice test. Don't use GMATPrep (a free download from MBA.com). These are the best and should be saved for last. Manhattan GMAT and Kaplan both offer free tests that give diagnostics showing how you performed on each type of question. I think MGMAT's diagnostics are the best, though.

Hi there,

I see you are just beginning your GMAT prep. You should start out with taking a practice test to see where you are and compare that with where you want to be (score wise). Then you can better judge how much work you have to do. You may realize you need a little more help than just self study, or it may reinforce your decision to self study. You can take your practice test here: https://theprincetonreview.com/free-onli ... tests.aspx.

If you decide you would like to take a course, The Princeton Review offers a program to suit anyone, anywhere. You can check out our various classroom and online courses here: https://www.princetonreview.com.

On the other hand, if you decide to stick with self study, here is a book that I highly recommend: Cracking the GMAT 2010 edition https://www.princetonreviewbookstore.com/. It is wide ranging and covers all aspects; great for newbies

I hope this information helps you get started! If you have any other questions please feel free to shoot me an email [email protected] or give me a call at 949.863.6017.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Best Regards,
Anthony
