Don't know anyone who's taken the Kaplan private tutoring services before. Have you confirmed that either self study or a regular classroom course wouldn't meet your needs?

Kaplan tutoring

by Jen Kedro » Tue Jul 29, 2008 1:49 pm
Hi,

I certainly encourage those who have taken private tutoring to chime in with the pros/cons or value of it; but I can jump in briefly from a teacher/tutor's perspective. I've led both classroom courses and tutoring programs for years, and they are both very effective. At Kaplan, all of our tutoring students are invited to attend our classroom course as well for free, so tutoring is essentially classroom, plus the private instruction on top of that. I'd say there are 2 big differences in private instruction...

First, you can tailor that portion of the program entirely to you and your strengths and weaknesses. Need to focus a ton more on math or verbal, or specific topics? Tutoring is great for that.

Secondly, when you sit down with a tutor, you have the benefit of the teacher observing EXACTLY how YOU approach problems and how your mind is working, so you get really personalized advice and feedback that sometimes isn't possible in a group setting. I often felt in tutoring I could diagnose a students strengths/weaknesses even better, because you can sit and have them try some problems and see where they struggle.

But all in all, classroom programs are extremely thorough and comprehensive, and I've seen great results from each. So really depends on you, how you learn best, and how much you want to invest.
Good luck!

Feedback for Kaplan coaching in Pune.
I took Kaplan classroom coaching in Pune (Deccan), Total fees, when i joined, was approx 24K.
The online materials and books are very good.
Quant instructor is quite good, but Verbal instructor wasn't as per my expectations, she only helped in AWA and SC, no good support for CR and RC.
I was specially looking for guidance in Verbal (tough CR and RC). I was surprised when the instructor herself used to get wrong answers and gave an excuse, "Oh I didn't read the question correctly", "I thought we had to weaken the argument", even when she had the answer's and explanations right in front of her, right on the screen. On RC questions, her gestures and explanations came after reading the answer explanations, reiterating what was in the OA explanation.
what Crap !! . Verbal coaching was of no use, not worth the money i spent. Perhaps other kaplan coaching centers are good enough.
