Unlike the original National Museum of Science and Technology in Italy, where the models are encased in glass or operated only by staff members, the Virtual Leonardo Project, an online version of the museum, encourages visitors to "touch" each exhibit, which thereby activates the animated functions of the piece.
A. exhibit, which thereby activates
B. exhibit, in turn an activation of
C. exhibit, and it will activate
D. exhibit and thereby activate
E. exhibit which, as a result, activates

I have encountered this question so many times...still I make mistake...Can somebody please explain this SC

,Which always modifies the preceding noun....

In this case it seems like exhibit will activate the animated functions... so it is wrong...

Therefore we can rule out A and E

C: 'it' - pronoun issue...

B - noun formed used which doesn't make sense..

IMO A

B- passive voice
C- referring it
D- changes the meaning, visitors are not activating the animations,but the touch is activating
E- comma should be precede which and which should refer a noun.

+1, it should be D. and elimination as explained by pheonix, with subtle difference behind rejection of E
I rejected E because of comma after 'which' . Which is used for non-essential clause and should be preceded by comma NOT succeeded by it.

The correct answer is choice D. The "visitors... thereby activate the animated functions..."

Visitors is a plural noun and requires a plural verb ("activates").

The other answer choices make it seem as if the "exhibit" itself is activating the animated functions.

Choice A: Incorrect. "Which thereby activates" incorrectly modifies "exhibit." The "exhibit" does not activate the animated functions--a visitor's touch does.

Choice B: Incorrect. "In turn an activation of" incorrectly modifies "exhibit." The "exhibit" is not "in turn an activation of the animated functions..."

Choice C: "It" incorrectly refers to the "exhibit." The "exhibit" does not activate the functions. ("It" cannot refer to "the visitors" because "visitors" is a plural noun and would require a plural pronoun--namely, "they.")

Choice E: Again, "which... activates" incorrectly modifies "exhibit." Choice E is also wordy and awkward, and as lovesusonu points out, the comma is incorrectly placed after the "which" of a non-essential clause.
