Need Help on Study Plan

by bhavin.panchal » Wed Nov 25, 2009 8:39 am
My Introduction:
I am a software engineer from India with approx. 10 years of IT Experience. Working for one of the MNC in Bangalore, India. I am a Computer Engineer from 1999 batch. I purchased following GMAT material for my preparation:
- GMAT OG 11TH & 12TH Editions
- Kaplan GMAT Premier Book ( 2010 Edition with Online Account )
- Barron's GMAT 15TH Edition with CD ( 2010 ) Edition.
- Manhattan SC Book

Following is the list of downloaded material I have :
- 1000 RC, SC & couple of others.
- Some Vedic Mathematics PDF.
- Neha's Quant Review 2 Fundamental
- Some other PDFs for reference & review.

Current Status on My preparation:
- I have NOT yet given GMAT Exam & plan to give Exam in APR 2010.
- I am staying with my family & also working fulltime. Hence, I have a frequent breaks/gaps in my preparation of GMAT exam for various official and personal reason.
- I believe that, I am weak in mathematics. I can do better with AWA , SC & RC sections compared to Mathematics.
- However, I don't have any specific strategy in my preparation and plan on what to complete when? How shall I plan my preparation & execute the plan?
- I am able to spend approx. 12 to 14 hours a week for my preparation including weekends.

Can somebody please help me in preparing my study plan?

Looking foward for your guidance.

Thank you,

Bhavin

Hi Bhavin,

Welcome! You believe you're weak in mathematics. I'd suggest you first confirm (or deny) this belief by taking a practice test! Go to mba.com, register, and download the GMAT Prep software. This software contains two full-length practice GMAT tests, complete with the OFFICIAL scoring algorithm.

Before this weekend, just get familiar with the test. NOT STRATEGIES OR PRACTICE PROBLEMS, but just the difference between the five different types of problems (PS, DS, CR, RC, SC), how long each section is, etc. This weekend, block off 4 hours and take the test. Don't worry about how you're doing, this is just to see where your strengths and weaknesses currently lie.

Good luck, and post back with results: the community can help you further then.

Hello,

Please find my test details as follows:

Score Percentile
Total 420 17
Verbal 17 11
Quant 31 33

Looks like I need real hardwork to improve the same.

Bhavin

Fantastic! Now you know your baseline, and can improve from here. In order to know the area you should target first, what's your question breakdown? In other words, what was your percent correct for RC questions, SC questions, etc..?

Also, as you are narrowing down which specific sections you are having most trouble with--ask yourself WHY you got that question wrong? Was it a keyword that you missed?

Did you misread the question? Did you feel pressured with time? What could you have done differently to arrive at the right answer next time?

Go over all the questions you got wrong and then wait 2 days and retake the test. See if you make the same mistakes that you made the first time (even after reviewing the answers and explanations).

Keep re-doing these questions every couple days to make sure you learn from your mistakes.

Here's an article for reference that might help: https://www.gmatpill.com/practice-questi ... questions/
