CR Problem

by sabiha » Mon Aug 30, 2010 11:32 pm
Clark must have known that his sister Janet and not the governess pulled the trigger, but he silently stood by while the jury convicted the governess. Any person of clear conscience would have felt terrible for not having come forward with the information about his sister, and Clark lived with that information until his death 30 years later. Since he was an extremely happy man, however, I conclude that he must have helped Janet commit the crime.

Which of the following assumptions must underlie the author's conclusion in the last sentence?

A Loyalty to members of one's family is conducive to contentment.
B Servants are not to be treated with the same respect as members of the peerage
C Clark never had a bad conscience over his silence because he was also guilty of the crime.
D It is better to be a virtuous man than a happy one.
E It is actually better to be content in life than to behave morally toward one's fellow humans.

My reasoning here is that since he was happy man, he was content with what he did and wasn't much aware morally.
Thus I choose E which came out be incorrect.

Could anyone please explain this one.
Thanks in advance

Could anyone please explain this one.
Thanks in advance
think the answer choice should be C
i consider this CR question " how to support the conclusion" and C is what we need.
C knows that his sister committed but he hided it >>> the governer was accused
Everybody who did the same as C does feels guity for that but C.
conclusion : he must help his sister commit crime.
Assumstion should be " he is also a accomplisher"

Here is another problem I am unable to figure out

I recently read a book by an author who insists that everything man does is economically motivated. Leaders launch wars of conquest in order to capture the wealth of other nations. Scientists do research in order to receive grants or find marketable processes. Students go to college to get better jobs. He even maintains that people go to museums to become better informed on the off-chance that some day they will be able to turn that knowledge to their advantage. So persuaded was I by the author's evidence that, applying his theory on my own, I was able to conclude that he had written the book __________.

Which of the following provides the most critical completion of the above paragraph?
A. as a labor of love
B. in order to make money
C. as a means of reforming the world by calling man's attention to his greed
D. as an exercise in scientific research in response to a creative urge to be a novelist
E. in response to a creative urge to be a novelist

Since all that is explained in the paragraph is that everything a human does is with the intention of making money, so my answer is B, which again comes out to be the wrong option. What could be the correct reasoning?

Sabiha,

Please post new question in a different thread.

Coming to your second question.

Answer is straight B.
I am not seeing any other choice close to the right one.

Can you give the source of this problem and OA.

Are these GMAT style questions? Have not come across such pattern's before.

I went with 'B' for the 2nd question.

Hi,

Even my answer for this was B but it comes out that I was wrong, the correct answer was given as C.

ohh i first of all chose B as you did then reread it and finally chose C but not sure if my answer is correct. what is the answer?

the boy read about a book writing about greed of money and gave out examples to prove his opinion and the best info is
about people going to musium just to get knowledge so that they can use it in the future to creat their own benefit.
A is not correct because its not about love of working, its about money and greed of human.
B is so extream.
C concludes all examples into a sentence and it does makes sen
D and E is not very much into the scope, and even if it is, it doesnt say about the man writing the book wanted to be a novelist. its not a story, or a love story...its not about novel its about human and our material desire.
thus C is my answer
