when to start taking practice CAT?

by basso25@ » Sun Mar 03, 2013 10:49 am
thx you in advance for your advice/direction/thoughts/etc. my question is: when should i start taking practice CATs in my gmat studying + pursuit to beat the gmat w/ a 700+ score?

my current situation/background: started studying beginning of this year (2013), have not booked test date but thinking may/june time frame. i am a fall 2014 applicant (kellogg dream school). i come from non-quant background (marketing/ad agency side); therefore, for past 2 months (and prob for next 2 months) i am dedicating studying strictly to math.

reviewing full manhattan gmat books + foundations of math. gone through concepts twice now (from arthimetic to numb properties); now approx. 50% through all OG13 quant questions (currently in Word Problems Guide #3 of #5).

does it make sense to take only math portion of a practice CAT in my situation? or what would you suggest as an alternative?

i'm following the advice i've read in this forum that you want to master each concept, let alone each section, prior to moving on to next. my verbal will clearly be stronger than math. but no home run for verbal either; i will need to apply myself to the material (that said, more confident there than math).

of course, i've taken a diagnostic test prior to starting all of this (640 - manhattan). so, when would you advise that i start taking practice CATs?

thank you so much -- i really appreciate it!!

A good idea is to start taking tests 6 weeks before the exam when you have almost finished studying the theory. At that point take one test a week in the next three weeks and then start taking tests more often - 2 tests per week until the test date.
I also don't think it is a good idea to focus solely on the quantitative section. Try to do at least 30 minutes of work on the verbal every day. This way you will not feel so fed up with the quant and your revision will be more systematic.

thank you very much, kaisa! but this advice seems somewhat contrary to popular opinion here on the forum: to start taking practice exams, and once you start scoring at target goal range, then you should book test date. what if it takes me more than 6 weeks to get to target score range?
