Profile evaluation for HBS 2+2

by Prithvi » Tue Jan 27, 2009 12:13 pm
Hey Stacy,

I am an Indian student(female) pursuing my engineering in 3rd year. I am planning to apply to HBS 2+2 next semester. My primary area of expertise lies in internet marketing and in increasing the efficiencies of start-ups. I would be very grateful to you if you can evaluate my profile and give me an honest feedback of my chances:

My profile looks like this:
Engineering from Bangalore university, GPA: One in top 10 in University.
Good recommendations from MIT alumni
Set-up operations for a high technology angel funded start-up founded by MIT-IIT alumni in a new region. Independently managed sales, marketing and operations for the company. Secured a long term client and built relationships with 20 colleges in a span of 15 days. Coordinated with testing team to meet deadlines. Reduced operations costs significantly for the company. Conceptualizing and leading the campus ambassador program to promote greater interaction with colleges.
Vice- President of a youth information portal. Leading efforts to sell ad space, working on building a revenue model for the team and a uniform incentive structure.
Worked closely with social enterprises in showcasing their work for a global online philanthropy platform. Recruited and led a team of 10 people for the platform and worked closely with 20 NGO's in India.
Not yet taken GMAT.

Can you give me a honest feedback of my chances? Since I am from India, it would make things much harder for me. I have heard that apart from IIT's HBS does not look at anybody from other universities, especially under-grads. Can you please clarify these?

Do you think my profile is competitive for 2+2? My GPA is amongst the top 10 in my university and my internship experiences are mainly business related. Would this hamper my chances?

Please let me know if the 2+2 is a good fit with my experience or if I should consider the regular MBA program. I'm particularly excited by the 2+2 program as it offers a lot of training for the MBA program.

Cheers,
P

Dear P,

Since I have not worked for HBS, I'm not sure how HBS will view your university. When business schools assess GPA, they do take into account the degree earned and the school as there are variances in rigor and competition. HBS is familiar with many international institutions, so I would assume the assessment of your degree will be fair. Schools do not generally exclude applicants based on where they attended, but the competitiveness of the school is taken into account on your evaluation.

Your GMAT will be critical to your chances. I would think anything less than a 700 will put you at a disadvantage. This is a highly competitive program with minimal slots, so HBS can be more selective with this program than the traditional MBA program. I think the rest of your profile could be interesting as you do have some strong work experience. If you feel you meet the requirements and that the program is a good fit for you, then you should apply (assuming you do well on the GMAT).

Best of luck,
Lisa
