strands

by vscid » Mon Jan 05, 2009 4:20 pm
The strand fills with water during rainy season that the peat then holds and keeps it humid, all of which creates conditions enabling trees to grow.

a] enabling trees to grow

b] for the trees to grow

c] for growing trees

d] that enable the trees to grow

e] that the trees can grow
The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.

I am between B and D but B kind of sounds awkward :

which creates conditions for he trees to grow

Creates X to GROW - change of meaning

D is more clear.

i was stuck between A and D.
chose D coz "that the peat ....... , .... conditions that enable trees to grow. "
seemed parallel.
Also avoid the present participle form.. therefore avoid A.

What is OA ?

this question maybe similar to Q222, in OG 1o

I do not know why B is wrong. Normally, participle doing is prefered than ralative clause for concision

"the" in D is better than "no the" in B,

I do not know pls, explain , any one

B is wrong is because "enabling" should modifiy conditions. it is more logic.

but why A is wrong, and pls see Q 222. OG 10

In Q 222, it is best to avoid the relative pronoun to avoid ambiguity of the pronoun referent. 222 can't be compared to this question. I think D is better because of parallelism as another poster had pointed out before.
