work problem

by knight247 » Tue Jul 12, 2011 10:42 am
Can three men and seven women finish a certain piece of work in 15 days?
(1)Two men and four women can finish the work in 10 days
(2)Each of the two women can do twice the work that each of the men can do in a given time

I don't have an OA but detailed explanations would be appreciated.

Question - (3M +7W)*15 = W ?
1 - Given - (2M + 4W)*10 = W - So even if 1M + 3W sit idle W will be completed in 10days..so answer
is YES and it is Sufficient.

2-Given - w=2M => 3M + 7W = 17M but this dosent say anything about the work..so Not sufficient

Answer is A

to add on to Srikanth's soln :

(2M + 4W) = 10 days

(1M + 2W) = 20 days

thus,
(3M + 6W) = 20/3 days = 6.6 days

question asks (3M + 7W)- thus we have a women extra and we already can complete the work in 6.6 days.

A
Cheers !!

This is a bad question for at least two reasons:

1. Statement 1 is a bit strange. As others have pointed out, if we know 2 men and 4 women can do a job in 10 days, of course more people with more time will be able to the job.

2. The unstated assumption (for Statement 1 at least) that all men work at the same rate and all women work at the same rate is a little ridiculous. Maybe the addition of more men will mean men get in the way and stop work from being done? Maybe they will go off and watch TV...
