Spend almost 2 hrs to find a common strategy but could not find one.

this is not really an issue of idiomatic usage; this is a significant difference in meaning. specifically, "increase" signifies that some quantity has actually attained a greater level, while "greater (than)" just makes a comparison between two quantities, not implying that one has changed to the other.
