as...as Tough SC

I understand this question has been discussed before. However, I didn't understand in depth the suggestions in that thread. I've enhanced the question with slight variation : The question (2). Can someone explain what the answer would be for (2) - and whether it would be identical to (1)? The discussions on the validity of "it" didn't seem that convincing earlier - I'm hoping these two example side-by-side might shed a bit more light on this confusion!! Please Help!

1)
There are hopeful signs that we are shifting away from our heavy reliance on fossil fuels; more than ten times as much energy is generated through wind power now than it was in 1990.
A generated through wind power now than it was
B. generated through wind power now as it was
C. generated through wind power now as was the case
D. now generated through wind power as it was
E. now generated through wind power than was the case
OA : C

2)
There are hopeful signs that we are shifting away from our heavy reliance on fossil fuels; more than ten times as much energy is generated now than it was in 1990.
A generated now than it was
B. generated now as it was
C. generated now as was the case
D. now generated as it was
E. now generated than was the case

The problem with both 1) after eliminating answer choices A and E for using incorrect idioms [as..than] is the usage of the pronouns. The pronoun it is very ambiguous in choices B and D,for it could either refer to energy for wind power. Therefore C.

In question 2 both A and E are eliminated for same reasons as in 1.In 2 I believe all choices B,C,and D are correct for the comparison is between energy and energy, and the pronoun it is not ambiguous.

Ok - that would make sense! I assumed the (2) would clarify the pronoun antecedent 100%. But How is D right in case of (2)? Doesn't switching the word "now" change the meaning of BOTH the sentences?

I thought of that too!

But it won't!

unlike only, which can act both as an adjective and as an adverb, now, only acts as an adverb.

I checked oxford dictionary to confirm this!

You know the rule of an adverb. It is subject to much less strict rules as compared to adjectives[the sentences in which only changes the meaning, only acts as an adjective and not as an adverb].

Therefore, the placement of now wouldn't affect the meaning.

The adverb in all cases expresses the following meaning:

B,C more than 10 times energy is generated though wind power at this time [now]
D more than 10 times energy is at this time generated through wind power

In B,C,and D now is modifying generated. wind power is a noun.

Remember adverbs can't modify nouns?

now-oxford dictionary

adverb

1 at the present time or moment:

where are you living now?
it's the most popular style of jazz right now
