In The Divine Comedy, the pagan poet Virgil appears as an appropriate guide through Hell and Purgatory on account of writing the Messianic Eclogue, a poem mistakenly regarded in the Middle Ages as a Christian prophecy.

A. on account of writing
B. on account of his writing
C. because he wrote
D. because of writing
E. as having written

The fact that Virgil wrote the Messianic Eclogue is the reason that he is an appropriate guide through hell, so "because" is the best choice. "On account of" is awkward and unidiomatic, and "as" doesn't make sense at all.

Between B and C, the simple past "wrote" makes the meaning clear.
