GMAT Score:750
Hey guys, please let me know what do you think and give me some advice. The actual test day is approaching fast, very fast - 5th of January.

Background: Non-English. Spent two summers in the US (total of six months). Using English at work, written and spoken, in an Economics/Legislation context.Very good math skills.

Well, here goes:

Back in August I decided to take the GMAT. Bought Kaplan Premiere Program 2009, OG 11 (plus Verbal and Quant review). Studied for about two or three weeks back then (not intensively, mostly weekends), OG only, did not even open the Kaplan book. Then I took a long pause, as I had a very busy period at the office.

Last week I realized I was running out of time for my applications deadlines, so I scheduled my GMAT on January 5th, planning to study intensively in my winter break (December 23rd - January 4th).

For my second round of study, I knew I needed a diagnostic test, so without any practice whatsoever since September, I took CAT#1 from the free GMAT Prep on MBA.COM. Surprisingly, I scored 720 on the first attempt. I was familiar with the GMAT questions from my previous study time, but still, I thought it's too much. I repeated the test today, still without any practice (I haven't open the Kaplan book yet), and about 1/4 of the questions repeated, I still managed to answer wrong questions that repeated, too bad for me!. I scored 740 on the second attempt.

Now what I would like to ask is how good is the rating at this free GMAT Prep? And how could I estimate were exactly do I stand now. I don't remember last week results, but I got 7 wrong on quant and 4 wrong on verbal this time, and I still got 740. Is it for real, can this happen on the real GMAT as well? I now I shouldn't get very excited, but it is really a much needed confidence boost, given the short period of study time available until the actual test.

Anyway, I know I can definitely improve the quant score, as I have always been good at Math, all the 7 mistakes were entirely due to lack of concentration (I was after 11 hours of work, and it was 10 PM when I started the test, and I woke up at 5:30 AM).

Other details:
-Just last week I got my TOEFL score (took the exam on November 22nd). Got 110, so RC and AWA shouldn't pose any real problems to me, I guess.
-I skipped the AWA both times, since I believe it only adds up to the tiredness factor, and I was tired enough after work. I will not practice AWA at all, since I'm only interested in the total score. I'm sure I can get 4.0 - 5.0 without any practice.

Please let me know what do you think, and on what strategy should I concentrate in these two weeks before my actual test, in order to maximize my score.

Best regards,
Dima

The GMATPrep cat is the most accurate you can find outside of actually taking the real exam. That's pretty amazing that you scored so well on both cats with such a long break and relatively little study, but you should feel good about it. One score over 720 *might* be lucky, but twice is a pretty good sign. Your strength in verbal (missing only 4) probably plays a huge factor since it weighs more heavily on the overall score. Plus you're probably just a good test taker; I'm guessing you have done very well on other standardized tests in the past.

My suggestion is to just go over the mistakes you made on the cats you took, review the OG11 material, and practice some more cats. You have a very limited time frame so you shouldn't really try to jam too much in.

Just took GMATPrep Practice Test #2. The results were:

Total score: 740 (Q - 50; V - 39). Got 6 incorrect on Math and 7 on verbal.

I am just so pissed that I keep getting so many wrong answers at Quantitative. Out of 6 wrong answers, 4 were due to lack of concentration. I should work on my concentration. BTW, all the wrong answers were from DS.

Regarding the Verbal part, my weakest spot is SC (5 out of 7 wrong answers). Will try to improve it over the next week.

Anyway, my target score is 700+, and I guess that getting 700+ 3 times on GMATPrep means that with some concentration, improvement in Verbal and lots of luck, luck I should achieve my goal. :D

I really thought getting 700 is very hard, and that one should get at most 5-6 questions wrong to get 700. Now I really think I can do better. Will concentrate on CATS (have another 6 of them that came with Kaplan), and on the Verbal review.

Thanks guys, this is just a great site.

50 on Q is very close to the maximum score of 51 - you should be proud of that score not disappointed. My suggestion for the remaining period since you're already performing at such a high level with Q is to focus on Verbal and take practice cats. The cats will help you maintain your Q score while the focus on Verbal will push your overall score up. For SC, if you haven't already, buy the MGMAT SC book. It's a very good book for understanding the fundamentals and that should help you out.

What people seem to not appreciate is that getting the fundamentals down will help even the most advanced questions because the complexity of SC inevitably boils down to combining several "funamental" errors into one long, drawn out sentence that aims to confuse. If you have a solid grounding, you can more readily recognize the individual errors and break down the question.

Good luck.

GMAT Score:770

you think?

Hey guys, I'm new at this and here's my experience with the free tests posted on the official GMAT site.
I for one honestly don't know what to think about them.... I took the second one three days ago and scored 700 (I can't even remember my scores in Q&V, at the moment it didn't seem relevant to me - I know, I'm too new at this), this being my first ever full test. Before this I admit I took the free math test from 800score sometime in October (all I remember is that I got about 75% of the questions right) and that's about how much experience I had with the whole thing.
Although I have a solid math background, I have NEVER before encountered DS questions, they don't have that type of math exercises in my country (Romania). Plus I'm not a native speaker of English, a fact that should affect my V scores. This is why I am a bit cautious when it comes to getting my hopes up, since after reading quite a few posts on this forum, I came to the conclusion that 700 on a first try would be pretty good. I think I'm gonna try the second test tonight and we'll see how it goes.
P.S. Happy New Year to all!

Well, I decided to take the Veritas free test instead and got another 700. Q(51) was relatively easy and got just 3 wrong, one of which I guessed because they "forgot" to put an "=" somewhere... V(39) wasn't as easy, I'm going to have to work on RC and CR...

Took another 3 CATs:

GMATPrep Test#1 - 3rd attempt:
TS: 760 (Q - 50; V - 42)

GMATPrep Test #2 - 2nd attempt:
TS: 720 (Q - 49; V - 40)

KAPTest Online:
TS: 720 (Q - 46; V - 43)

The test from Kaplan was different. The math part was easier than on GMATPrep, I had 22 minutes left on the clock at the time i finished the Q part. Got only 3 wrong, but only got 46, I can't really explain that.
The Verbal part was different as well. The texts on RC were longer, and I got 4 wrong on RC, but only one on SC (which I still think is my weak spot). Total of 5 wrong answers on Verbal.

Monday, Jan 5th, is the big day. I will do another CAT tomorrow, and maybe revise some Verbal stuff, not too much, as I'm still not very good at SC (although better that 2 weeks ago). I'm still hoping to get 51 at Quantitative, but I will have to be very attentive, and i hope I won't get too many statistical problems.

Well, Wish me good luck!
