MGMAT vs. GMAT Prep

by Random Wok » Mon Sep 27, 2010 2:07 pm
I'm currently about 3 weeks away from my test date and I have both MGMAT CATs to take / review and a GMAT Prep Test to take / review. I was wondering which I should focus more on?

I typically get the same score on both types of exams, but I've always felt that the math questions were very different. The MGMAT Math seemed extremely difficult if not close to impossible at times, while the GMAT Prep Math seemed a little too easy.

I was wondering which exam was more reflective of the actual math on the GMAT? Should I practice the somewhat difficult problems on the MGMAT, with the intent that I'm going to get and going to have to answer really tough math question on the actual GMAT?

Or should I focus more on the GMAT Prep Math questions, and build more of a core skillset? I found the great resource of 197 GMAT Prep 1 Math questions on this forum and I think I want to try to go through these.

Please let me know what you think the better strategy is. I've been scoring right around 700 consistently and I'm trying score in the 700+ range. While my Verbal is usually well in the 90th-95th percentiles, my Math is borderline 80th percentile.

I would recommend more focus on the GMAT Prep tests (specifically for Quant), only because GMAT Prep math questions are more tricky than MGMAT and are closer to the actual test. I just took the GMAT this Saturday and found GMAT Prep closest to the real test. I had taken all 6 MGMAT Tests at least once, and took teh GMAT Prep Tests about 4-5 times in the last 2 weeks before the test. Also, focus on OG problems, specially the ones towards the end.
Being defeated is often only a temporary condition. Giving up is what makes it permanent.

I completely agree with beathtegmatinsept.

GMAT prep tests will be your best bet, especially for Quant. I took my real test on sat and Quant questions tested are of similar types as found in GMAT prep and OG. But,they are more trickier on the real test. So if you know the reasoning behind a particular OG or GMAT prep problem then you will definitely be able to manage the Quant on the real test. MGMAT questions are hard but not tricky. For the verbal part, I found that the SC and RC questions were totally different on the real test. I had never come across such questions. The CR questions were again similar to OG.

I would say take one or two MGMAT tests now since you still have time for the actual test. And, during your last week, give the GMAT prep test.
Good Luck and let us know how it goes :-)
