Couple Of SC Qs.

by rs007 » Thu May 08, 2008 5:18 pm
I don't recall the actual SC questions but only remember that for each Q, i had to choose between two choices:

Question 1:
a.It’s important that the cake is made at home
b.It’s important that the cake be made at home

Question 2:
a.By the time I get there, the bus will probably have departed
b.By the time I get there, the bus probably will have departed

For each Q, please choose one of the two choices (with an explanation!)
Thanks!

Question 1:

Ans is b because it's subjunctive form with 'that' which means you have to use the infinitive form without 'to' and infinitive forms of be are 'to be', 'is', 'am' etc. since we can not get rid of to from 'is' I would go with (b) as the answer.

Questions 2:

Ans is (b) because probably is acting as an adverb hence it will come before or after the linking verb in this case.

I agree with the explanation for the first Q, but I do not agree with the second one.

Verbs of certainity go before the main verb, after the verb to be, and betwen any type of auxiliary verbs:

I (surely, certainly, probably) know.
I am probably confused. You are surely there, arn't you?
I will probably call.
I will probably have three correct answers.
Good luck to you all (now working on the gmat) and thank you all (who took it).
