by rompoto » Fri Jul 11, 2008 9:02 pm
Hi,
I cant understand this one. Can someone please help me on this

The European Economic Community exported just under $400 billion in goods in 1988, sixty percent more than the United states did and nearly twice as much as Japan's exports

A.
B.the United States' and nearly double what the Japanese exports were
C.the United States exported and nearly twice as much as the Japanese did
D.what the United States did and nearly twice as much as Japan's exports.
E.what the United States exported and nearly double the Japanese exports

whats wrong with A?
OA is C

The problem with A is that is lacks parallelism.

sixty percent more than the United states did and nearly twice as much as Japan's exports

"more than the United States did" does not match "as much as Japan's exports."

Notice how the correct answer C is the only option that makes both "halves" of the underlined portion parallel.

Sure the answer is C. Since it removes the comparision issue.

I dont know about the US and Japaneese and given the choice if one mroe correct chice comes, i would surely eliminate it on this basis. But with the given choice, i would go for C(Best not ideal)

may be the reason is the japanease is comapres with Export by United states.........Argh.....I need to refer notes again.

Regards

It does not give the comparative word which is used in C

Hope that clarifies.
