OG Verbal Review#39

by karmayogi » Sat Jan 24, 2009 8:07 am
A study commissioned by the Department of Argiculture showed that if caves excercise and associated with other calves, they will require less medication and gain weight quicker than do those raised in confinement.

A)
B) associated with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight quicker than
C) associate with other calves, they rquired less medication and will gain weight quicker than do
D) associate with other calves, they have required less medication and will gain weight more quickly than do
E) associate with other calves, they require less medication and gain weight more quickly than

OA: E
My doubt:
The conditional statement rule is "IF + present tense + THEN + WILL + verb in simple form." In the question, isn't "will" required in the underlined part?
Answer is E.

You are right on your stand but, such construction can indicate future or present even. there is only one answer is appearing with WILL, but in that

associated is not parallel with excercise. So the we will search for next option.

A - out, based on given fact. (associated is not parallel with excercise)
B- associated is not parallel with excercise
C- "they rquired less medication" showing past even, WRONG.
D- "they have rquired less medication" showing past even, WRONG.

E - COrrect
Shubham.
590 >> 630 >> 640 >> 610 >> 600 >> 640 >> 590 >> 640 >> 590 >> 590

So you mean, WILL is not mandatory in such conditional statement. Could you give me some reference to verify this?

Guys,

But do you think this Q is an example of Comma splice?

Both the statements are Independent Clauses.

A study ..showed ..... IC 1 , study - subject , showed - verb

they require ....IC 2 , they - Subject , require - verb

It's not a comma splice issue. "IF...THEN..." is equal to "IF...,..." In conditional statements, clause after "then" or comma is IC.
