Which with animals

by killerdrummer » Tue Apr 30, 2013 11:00 pm
Hi,
Is it true that we can not use "who" with animals and plants?
For instance take below example

Unlike lions and tigers, WHICH can roar by causing their hyoid bones to vibrate

OR

Unlike lions and tigers, WHO can roar by causing their hyoid bones to vibrate
--------------------------------
Don't forget to hit the "Thank" button,if you find above information helpful. :)

As Knewton says here: https://answers.knewton.com/entries/2006 ... y-written-
"Who" is used to modify people, and "which" or "that" is used to modify things. However, animals are a grammar grey-area. The rule of thumb for animals is that we can use "who" when we're talking about the animal as a cognitive being. If we're not talking about the animal as a cognitive being, then we use "which" or "that." Since animals are a grammar grey area, the GMAT will never make you choose between "who" and "that" or "which" for an animal.
They have a good example on that page linked to above.
