Gyrfalcon - OG Verbal Review SC72

by pakaskwa » Sun Mar 15, 2009 1:38 am
The gryfalcon, an Arctic bird of prey, has survived a close brush with extinction; its numbers are now five times greater than when the use of DDT was sharply restricted in the early 1970's.

A. same
B. extinction; its numbers are now five times more than
C. extinction; its numbers now fivefold what they were
D. extinction, now wieht fivefold the numbers they had
E. extinction, now with numbers five times greater than

I chose B, but the OA is A.

The explanation for B said, "the use of more instead of greater inappropriately implies there are now more numbers, rather than more gyrfalcons."

When can I use "numbers are greater than..." and when can I use "numbers are more than..."?

Or should I always say "numbers are greater than..."?

Thanks Mals24, i did read Ron's explaination but i'm not clear on this particular thing which he mentioned :

choice a is better than choice e, because it features a clear temporal shift, signalled by the verb tenses: from the present perfect has survived, indicating the fact that the survival is an ongoing process that has continued into the present, to the simple present are, which indicates that those are the numbers right now. in choice e, the temporal shift is nowhere near as clear.

Could somebody pour in some views on this ?
