(C) is the right answer.

"One reason" and "because" are redundant - you'd never use both in the same sentence, so eliminate (a), (b) and (e) (which also uses "because" and "the reason").

(D) makes a similar error - "for the reason that" is both redundant and just plain silly sounding.

It also would have been perfectly acceptable to say:

"Many waterfowl die each year of lead poisoining because they often ingest spent shotgun pellets."

Making mistakes in practice is actually good - you just need to view each mistake as a learning experience. If you never make mistakes, you never know what you need to do to get better.

Stuart,

if an answer choice had the following, would it be right?

One reason why many waterfowl die each year of lead poisoning is that

I'm trying to understand the impact of why in such a sentence. Would that make it unsuitable in this case?

It is quite common that we hear and say "the reason why.." and "One reason why..". Is this correct?
