recession of 1973

by itsmebharat » Wed Jun 01, 2011 2:44 am
During the recession of 1973, home mortgage foreclosures resulted in tens of thousands of Americans being evicted from homes that they can no longer afford monthly payments.
(A) that they can
(B) that they could
(C) on which they can
(D) because they can
(E) for which they could

OA is E

I know the answer but please explain why OA is correct.
I am not an Expert, please feel free to suggest if there is an error.

We need to go with an option which has THEY COULD !!
Left with B and E.

In this sentence we are meaning some causal effect.. x happened because Y
SO i feel to show this effect option E using for is better
That : is generally used as relative clause when are emphasis is more on describing houses in which they use to stay.
simplify the sentence: americans were evicted from the houses THAT/FOR WHICH they could not afford d rent.
Which sounds better?

Also, in case we consider THAT, to whom does THAT refers? houseS? shouldnt it be plural, use THOSE instead

I hope it helps

Thanks

we require a reason to support why were the people evicted and "for which" in option E provides the same..........

@itsmebharat: that can refer to singular as well as plural things
