The correct format is: not so much as ...... as. Therfore we can eliminate B,C,E.

We are left with:
A. Denim jeans were originally worn not so much as a fashion statement as for their being practical work clothes
D. Denim jeans were originally worn not as a fashion statement as for them being practical work clothes

With D it is saying that not one person originally wore jeans as a fashion statement. This is a very bold statement and is incoorect.

With A it is saying people wore jeans more as a works clothes than fashion statement. This is more believable.
