Hi Abhijit K,

I agree with David that this sentence seems problematic. Was it transcribed correctly (notice how answers A and B are identical)? Is anything "missing" from the prompt and the answers?

From the opening phrase, it certainly appears that we're dealing with Modification rules. The first part of the sentence (leading up to the comma) describes a person, so "Wilbur Strom" should immediately follow the opening phrase. Of the two answers that fit the modification, neither seems particularly 'great.'

Intended Meaning:

Wilbur Strom coped with the real world by day dreaming about being an achiever.

Error(s) in the Stem:

1. The modifier should be followed by its noun (the subject).

2. The plural verb 'enable' is incorrectly used with the singular subject 'daydreaming'.

Analysis of Options:

(A) This option has a modifier error. Who was nagged by his wife and shunned by his relatives and children alike? Wilbur Strom

and not daydreaming. Therefore, 'Wilbur Strom' should follow the comma after alike. Further, the plural verb 'enable' does not

match the singular subject 'daydreaming'.

(B) Though the second error is corrected in this option, the modifier error remains.

(C) This option introduces new word 'reacts' and changes the meaning of the sentence.

(D) This option also introduces the new word 'escapes' and changes the meaning of the sentence.

(E) Correct. 'Wilbur Strom' correctly follows its modifier, 'Nagged by ... alike' and in turn, is followed by the correct form of the verb: 'is able to cope'.
