Payment foe the book

Here is question.

David and Isabel collaborated on a book and David wrote 1/3 as many pages as Isabel did. If they receive $6,400 as payment for the book, and they divided the money in the same proportion as they divided the writing of the pages, how much money did Isabel receive?
a. 1,600
b. 1,800
c. 2,200
d. 4,800
e. 5,200

Let x = pages Isabel wrote
x/3 = pages david wrote
y = number of pages total

x + x/3 = y
(3x + x)/3 = y
4x = 3y
x = 3/4 y

Isabel wrote 3/4 of the pages so she should get paid 3/4 of the $6,400.

So 3/4 of 6400 = 4800

you can also try by picking numbers. pick some numbers that might be factors of 64 (6400). if David wrote 1/3 as many pages as Isabel, then lets say Isabel wrote 24 pages and David wrote 8 pages. so for 32 pages they get paid 6400.

so, for each page they get paid 6400/32 = 200 dollars.

Hence, Isabel gets 24*200 = 4800 dollars
going big!
