How would one know to convert 96 into either:

2^10*3^2

OR

8^2*3^2*2^4

RE: OG QUANT REVIEW Q 163 (GREEN BOOK)

Any advice would be much appreciated...

My green book is still in the mail so I can't look at the problem, but I can't see how either of those calculations can be equal to 96. Just multiplying them together shows much larger numbers.

When I factor down to the prime powers, I get (3)(2^5) which does equal 96.

I meant 96^2 and I can see now!

96 = 2^5*3

Therefore, since 96^2 = 2^10*3^2

Thanks!

Sorry for being a BOZO.

another way is, look at the above and try to cancle out the factors they put in for you. Gmat cannot ask you to factor that down in less than 2 mins, so u can try to factor the numerators and see which ones come out
