Why verb "is " is used in this sentence ?
A sentence needs at least one verb. "is" is the only verb in the sentence.

How else would you write it ?

The phrase " Having good friends" is the subject of the sentence. Literally, it is "the feeling" of having good friends that is a wonderful thing.
And obviously this "unique" feeling is singular.
Hope that helps.
